Report: Preseason 2010-11

Oxford United Ladies 09/10 season review.

Photos by Liam Faulkner in the Gallery

United Ladies carried on their good form following a promotion season into the Southern Region Premier finishing with a solid upper-middle table position.

After their promotion from the Southern Region First Division into the Premier it was the step up in physicality more than quality, which the ladies struggled with early on with a couple of performances in the early part of the season that they were not proud of, but once the ladies found their form there was to be no stopping them.

With quality on their side the young United team knew that once they got used to the pace and 'hustle and bustle' of the Premier, they would be able to compete with the better sides in the league. They showed just that with an unbeaten run lasting from early December through to late April culminating with a County Cup final appearance against local rivals Oxford City. City edged the final 2-0, but the battling performance from the U's showed that they are a force to be reckoned with and when the two sides meet again this season (this time in the first round of the County Cup) City will know that United aren't a side to be taken lightly.

The off-season saw a change in Management for the Ladies and the Ladies Reserves. Academy coach Ben Thomas will be stepping up to manage the first team alongside coach Richard Blackmore and Tim Roberts, current under 16’s girl's manager, will be taking on the Reserves. Both managers come with a wealth of experience and after positive seasons for both teams (the Reserves had a successful season winning promotion on the final day) they will be looking to push on again and raise the quality.

Pre-season 2010 began early for the ladies as they packed their summer fixture list with trips to higher league opposition coming away even with two wins and two losses and this time United will be ready to compete from the off and will be looking to press for a promotion place come May.

The season begins on Sunday, 22nd August. Check out the www.ou-yc.co.uk/ladies for more information and match reports as the season progresses.

Report: Wycombe Wanderers Home

United 3 - 1 Wycombe Wanderers

United went into this match against local rivals Wycombe Wanderers still looking for thier first points of the season and an experienced upper-mid table side was going to be a tough test for newly promoted Oxford.

The match started in a scrappy fashion with both sides struggling to get any meaningful possession. Wycombe were looking to get the ball wide early and run at United's defence, but were unable to break through Oxford's backline and create any real chances. It was Oxford who broke the deadlock with a well taken goal from Jane Yeading slotting the ball throuh the keeper's legs after being put through on goal by a great ball from the midfield, splitting the Wycombe centre halfs.

The goal boosted Oxford's confidence and saw them start to create some decent chances, but found the finish lacking. They were almost left to rue those chances as Wycombe's lone striker found herself through on goal only to be denied by a fantastic save by Georgie Currie in the Oxford goal.

United made it through to the break 1-0 up, but knew the first 10-15 minutes after the break would be massively important and needed to keep it tight.

As expected the second have saw Wycombe come out of the blocks the fastest and saw them raise the tempo of the match as they looked for the equaliser. Oxford's defence stood strong, but it was finally breached on 72 minutes.

The equaliser woke United up and it was them who took the game to Wycombe, determined to take all three points from the match. It took just 10 minutes after the equaliser for Oxford to regain the lead. It came thanks to a mistake from Wycombe's goalie along with excellent anticipation from Yeading. The keeper, who had been playing almost as a sweeper while Wycombe were a goal down, again came to the edge of her area, but with the hard ground she misjudged the bounce. Yeading nipped in behind and headered the ball into the empty net from 12 yards.

United killed off the game with a couple of minutes remaining as the ball was switched by Clare Marsh out to the right into the path of Dani Anderson who finished well past the keeper to round off a great match for United.

Report: Henley Town - Home

United 0 - Henley 1

United fail to get the points from a game in which they dominated possession, but struggled to create any real chances.

Oxford handed a debut to new signing Bev Hirons and it was Hirons running early on which caused Henley’s back four all kinds of problems. United were getting the ball wide quickly and the pace of their wingers was getting them into good positions, but Henley defended well and Oxford were reduced to long shots from their midfield trio, which were comfortably dealt with by the keeper.

But it was Henley who hit first on one of their rare ventures forward. United’s left back, sure the ball was drifting out of play, took her foot off the gas only to see the winger nip in, steal the ball and get a cross into the box. Henley’s lone striker, marshalled by both centre half’s, somehow managed to turn her way past them both and get half a yard to shoot into the corner leaving keeper Georgie Currie with no chance.

The goal deflated United, but they kept it tight for the remainder of the half and went into the break with the score 1-0 to Henley Town.

The second half again saw United take control of the possession and pass the ball around well, but their final ball was lacking and left Hirons feeding off scraps. United’s best chance of the match to level the scores came after the Henley defence switched off and midfielder Kath Boardman seized upon a weak throw and freed Hirons, but from the tight angle she was only able to fire just over the bar.

With United pushing for the equaliser it was inevitable that Henley would be able to hit them on the break, but on the few occasions they were able to pierce that back line they found an in form and resolute Currie in goal, determined to keep United in the game.

In the last 10 minutes Oxford stepped up another gear and with Henley’s delaying tactics, the match threatened to boil over. In the end though United couldn’t find a way and the match ended 1-0 to the away side.

Report: Shanklin Town - Home

Oxford United Ladies new season in the Southern Region Premier started with defeat at the hands of Shanklin Town Ladies as United struggled to get to grips with their new league.

After an excellent pre-season all the ladies hard work was undone as Shanklin hit Oxford with two quick goals coming within the first 10 minutes of the match. From here it was always going to be an uphill struggle, but the ladies clawed their way back into the match and were undoubtedly having their best spell of the match when Shanklin hit the killer blow. After possession broke down in the middle of the pitch, Town pumped a long ball over the top. United all waited for the flag for offside, but it never came and a sure finish from the Shanklin striker made it 3-0 going into the half-time break.

The Oxford players, unhappy with their performance knew they needed to show the management they were better than this and started the stronger of the two sides in the second half. With the defence looking more assured and the midfield creating chances it was United that had the first real chance of the second half. Lauran Spraggs' run down the right wing left the Shanklin keeper unsure whether to stay at home or come out leaving her doing neither and Spraggs was able to lift the ball over her. Unfortunately for Oxford, luck was not on their side. The covering defender, just getting to the ball before it crossed the line, sliced her clearance, but only onto the bar and away to safety rather than into the net.

United buoyed by that chance created another one on one chance shortly after, but a great save from the keeper saw the ball roll passed the post for a corner. At 3-2 it might have been different, but as it was Shanklin hit back again with two similar goals in the last 15 minutes making the final score 5-0. A scoreline that flattered the away side, but United will have to work harder if they want to get anything from this league.

An unhappy introduction, but maybe one that will spur the ladies on in the coming weeks.
