Oxford United Ladies Match Report vs. Henley Ladies

(2010-2011 Oxfordshire County Cup Final) space

On Sunday Oxford United Ladies met Henley Town Ladies in the final of the Ladies Oxfordshire Senior cup. Having reached their 2nd consecutive Senior cup final, the yellows were looking to secure the trophy for the first time, having narrowly lost last years final to rivals Oxford City. Having defeated city in the 1st round, OUFC have had to live with the favourites tag throughout the tournament and arrived at the final in excellent form having not lost since November.

It was a very hot and sunny afternoon at Bicester Town FC with a large crowd creating an excellent atmosphere. The ‘rock hard’ pitch didn’t really help the Oxford players’ passing game and the first 20 minutes was a bit of a battle with both teams struggling to get the ball down and play. United looked the more dangerous of the two sides creating a couple of decent opportunities through Lauren Allison and Ellie Roberts, the keeper diving bravely at the latter to prevent the opening goal.

The game continued to look scrappy and Henley’s pressing and work-rate was clearly disrupting Oxford United’s amount of possession, although on the counter-attack the yellows were continuing to look threatening. Finally after about 25 minutes the breakthrough was made after the referee correctly awarded oxford a penalty. Jane younger broke into the left hand side of the penalty area and attempted to cross but the ball hit the nearest Henley defenders’ hand and the ref had no option but to point to the spot.

Allison coolly dispatched the penalty to the keeper’s right and the relief was plain to see as the Oxford players celebrated.

It was hoped that the goal would settle Oxford down a bit with nerves obviously playing a large part in proceedings but they continued to struggle to pass the ball with any fluency and one or two lapses in concentration at the back allowed Henley a couple of glimpses of goal. Oxford keeper Ellen Hopkins did well to parry away a shot after the Henley striker had broken through on goal. Then suddenly disaster struck! A long lofted ball into the Oxford penalty area caused indecision between centre-back Amy Chivers and Hopkins, allowing the Henley striker to nip in and head over a stranded Hopkins, cue wild celebrations from the Henley players just 5 minutes before half-time. Roberts again almost got in for Oxford at the other end but alert goalkeeping averted the danger.

The second half started a lot like the first although Oxford United began to have far more possession in the attacking third of the pitch whilst not really creating anything clear cut. Henley continued to frustrate United with last gasp defending and excellent work-rate. Ellie Roberts was again close to getting in on goal after chasing down a long ball but failing to get past the Henley goalkeeper.
Oxford then came agonisingly close to regaining the lead as an in-swinging corner from Roberts was attacked by Chivers whose towering header came back off the cross-bar. Shortly after Roberts hit a post directly from a corner and a couple of goalmouth scrambles saw Henley just about survive.

Oxford introduced three subs all within minutes of each other to try and open up the Henley ‘rearguard action’. Stacey Coles, Holly Pickett and Harriet Dearlove all came on replacing, Younger, Emily Moore and Allison.

It was Coles who had the most effect, winning headers and tackles as well as driving the team on from midfield.

Then with just over 5 minutes left Coles latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the Henley penalty area and curled home a fantastic left foot shot into the top corner. It was truly memorable strike, worthy of winning any game. The relief and joy was obvious to see but the yellows still had 5 minutes to hold onto the victory. To be fair Oxford then produced their best football of the game stroking the ball around and playing out time comfortably in possession.

The final whistle finally came and Oxford United Ladies could celebrate their first Oxfordshire Senior cup victory.

Quote Ben Thomas (Manager)

‘Credit must go to the girls for the win. After a poor start to the season they have worked so hard for this opportunity and despite a relatively below par performance in the final, found a way to win the game. For such a young team to come through that kind of test on a difficult pitch was very encouraging and hopefully this is only the start of what could be a very successful team in the future.’

Div 1 Champions

Oxford United Ladies

Reserves clinch promotion for second season in succession.

Oxford United reserves have followed on from the success of last season, 2009/210 where they cinched the Thames Valley League Division 2 title, by winning the Thames Valley League Division 1 title this year 2010/2011.

This season has seen a superb effort from all players involved in the reserves, where they have so far remained unbeaten in the league. With 2 league games to go, both at home against Headington and Wycombe, the focus will be on continuing the development that has been evident this season, along with an ability to gain results from games where teams make it very difficult for the side play.

The reserve side has progressed over the past two seasons due in no uncertain terms to the development success of the Oxford United Girls Centre of Excellence. All girls that have left the Centre over the past 2 season have progressed into either the first team or reserves providing a consistent flow of talent into the senior environment. The important factor here is the focus placed at the centre on the development path of the girls from the Centre of Excellence through to the reserves side and ultimately through to the ladies first team. The transition between the CoE and the ladies set up now has a consistent focus.

The reserves will now progress through to the Southern Region league division 1.

Report: Oxford City (County Cup)

Oxford United 3 - 2 Oxford City

Photos by Liam Faulkner in the Gallery

Sunday's County Cup first round game saw United face their biggest and toughest challenge of their season so far as they came up against local rivals Oxford City. The rivalry has been heightened in the last few years as the Yellows have begun to climb the league pyramid and gain ground on the once dominant City. City still have the upper hand of the higher league position, competing one level above United in the South-West Combination. When the two sides met in the final of last years competition it was City who came out victorious with a 2-0 win at Witney United's Polythene UK Stadium. As the two teams meet again, this year being drawn against each other in the first round, it was time for United to get revenge.

Both sides understandably started nervously with neither one able to gain control, but as the match wore on it was City who looked to be gaining a foothold without ever seriously threatening Ellen Hopkins in goal. The first goal was always going to be important in a match like this, and it was United who took the lead after 23 minutes. Lauran May's excellent pressure, closing down the fullback and then the keeper, forced a mistake and Emily Moore looked to have capitalised as she ran through. City looked to have done enough though as they tried to rectify the error, but Moore had the presence of mind to draw the defenders to her before squaring the ball to the waiting May who powered home with her left to put the hosts in front.

The goal settled United and they grew into the game more, but City were not to be denied and pulled level before the break.

The second half started as the first had, but this time it was United who grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and took the lead once more. Again it was excellent pressure from United's forwards. This time Moore, chasing down a short backpass, was able to nip in and finish excellently from an increasingly tight angle. 2-1 United.

City, unable to play their football and frustrated by United, looked to be going out, but dragged themselves back into the game with just 10 minutes to play from a brilliantly struck free kick from 30 yards out. In the final minute of normal time it looked like City could snatch it as another free kick from a very similar position was awarded, but this time Hopkins was able to take the ball cleanly and force another 30 minutes.

So to extra time and again it was United who looked the more dominant and continued to play smart football and carve out the better chances. As the game looked to be heading to penalties the pressure finally told. An excellent cross from May came in from the right, was flicked on at the near post, finding substitute Laura Allsop unmarked to power an unstoppable header into the top corner.

City sparked into life and looked for a way back into the game and with almost the last kick of the match they were awarded another free kick around the box. Again however City were unable to beat Hopkins as she clutched the ball gratefully drawing one of the biggest cheers of the afternoon from the crowd.

A brilliantly contested match between two equally matched teams, but it is United who caused the cup upset and progress to the next round and they must now be hoping to better last year's Final appearance by bringing the cup home.

United Ladies carried on their good form following a promotion season into the Southern Region Premier finishing with a solid upper-middle table position.

After their promotion from the Southern Region First Division into the Premier it was the step up in physicality more than quality, which the ladies struggled with early on with a couple of performances in the early part of the season that they were not proud of, but once the ladies found their form there was to be no stopping them.

With quality on their side the young United team knew that once they got used to the pace and 'hustle and bustle' of the Premier, they would be able to compete with the better sides in the league. They showed just that with an unbeaten run lasting from early December through to late April culminating with a County Cup final appearance against local rivals Oxford City. City edged the final 2-0, but the battling performance from the U's showed that they are a force to be reckoned with and when the two sides meet again this season (this time in the first round of the County Cup) City will know that United aren't a side to be taken lightly.

The off-season saw a change in Management for the Ladies and the Ladies Reserves. Academy coach Ben Thomas will be stepping up to manage the first team alongside coach Richard Blackmore and Tim Roberts, current under 16’s girl's manager, will be taking on the Reserves. Both managers come with a wealth of experience and after positive seasons for both teams (the Reserves had a successful season winning promotion on the final day) they will be looking to push on again and raise the quality.

Pre-season 2010 began early for the ladies as they packed their summer fixture list with trips to higher league opposition coming away even with two wins and two losses and this time United will be ready to compete from the off and will be looking to press for a promotion place come May.

The season begins on Sunday, 22nd August. Check out the www.ou-yc.co.uk/ladies for more information and match reports as the season progresses.

Report: Wycombe Wanderers Home

United 3 - 1 Wycombe Wanderers

United went into this match against local rivals Wycombe Wanderers still looking for thier first points of the season and an experienced upper-mid table side was going to be a tough test for newly promoted Oxford.

The match started in a scrappy fashion with both sides struggling to get any meaningful possession. Wycombe were looking to get the ball wide early and run at United's defence, but were unable to break through Oxford's backline and create any real chances. It was Oxford who broke the deadlock with a well taken goal from Jane Yeading slotting the ball throuh the keeper's legs after being put through on goal by a great ball from the midfield, splitting the Wycombe centre halfs.

The goal boosted Oxford's confidence and saw them start to create some decent chances, but found the finish lacking. They were almost left to rue those chances as Wycombe's lone striker found herself through on goal only to be denied by a fantastic save by Georgie Currie in the Oxford goal.

United made it through to the break 1-0 up, but knew the first 10-15 minutes after the break would be massively important and needed to keep it tight.

As expected the second have saw Wycombe come out of the blocks the fastest and saw them raise the tempo of the match as they looked for the equaliser. Oxford's defence stood strong, but it was finally breached on 72 minutes.

The equaliser woke United up and it was them who took the game to Wycombe, determined to take all three points from the match. It took just 10 minutes after the equaliser for Oxford to regain the lead. It came thanks to a mistake from Wycombe's goalie along with excellent anticipation from Yeading. The keeper, who had been playing almost as a sweeper while Wycombe were a goal down, again came to the edge of her area, but with the hard ground she misjudged the bounce. Yeading nipped in behind and headered the ball into the empty net from 12 yards.

United killed off the game with a couple of minutes remaining as the ball was switched by Clare Marsh out to the right into the path of Dani Anderson who finished well past the keeper to round off a great match for United.

Report: Henley Town - Home

United 0 - Henley 1

United fail to get the points from a game in which they dominated possession, but struggled to create any real chances.

Oxford handed a debut to new signing Bev Hirons and it was Hirons running early on which caused Henley’s back four all kinds of problems. United were getting the ball wide quickly and the pace of their wingers was getting them into good positions, but Henley defended well and Oxford were reduced to long shots from their midfield trio, which were comfortably dealt with by the keeper.

But it was Henley who hit first on one of their rare ventures forward. United’s left back, sure the ball was drifting out of play, took her foot off the gas only to see the winger nip in, steal the ball and get a cross into the box. Henley’s lone striker, marshalled by both centre half’s, somehow managed to turn her way past them both and get half a yard to shoot into the corner leaving keeper Georgie Currie with no chance.

The goal deflated United, but they kept it tight for the remainder of the half and went into the break with the score 1-0 to Henley Town.

The second half again saw United take control of the possession and pass the ball around well, but their final ball was lacking and left Hirons feeding off scraps. United’s best chance of the match to level the scores came after the Henley defence switched off and midfielder Kath Boardman seized upon a weak throw and freed Hirons, but from the tight angle she was only able to fire just over the bar.

With United pushing for the equaliser it was inevitable that Henley would be able to hit them on the break, but on the few occasions they were able to pierce that back line they found an in form and resolute Currie in goal, determined to keep United in the game.

In the last 10 minutes Oxford stepped up another gear and with Henley’s delaying tactics, the match threatened to boil over. In the end though United couldn’t find a way and the match ended 1-0 to the away side.

Report: Shanklin Town - Home

Oxford United Ladies new season in the Southern Region Premier started with defeat at the hands of Shanklin Town Ladies as United struggled to get to grips with their new league.

After an excellent pre-season all the ladies hard work was undone as Shanklin hit Oxford with two quick goals coming within the first 10 minutes of the match. From here it was always going to be an uphill struggle, but the ladies clawed their way back into the match and were undoubtedly having their best spell of the match when Shanklin hit the killer blow. After possession broke down in the middle of the pitch, Town pumped a long ball over the top. United all waited for the flag for offside, but it never came and a sure finish from the Shanklin striker made it 3-0 going into the half-time break.

The Oxford players, unhappy with their performance knew they needed to show the management they were better than this and started the stronger of the two sides in the second half. With the defence looking more assured and the midfield creating chances it was United that had the first real chance of the second half. Lauran Spraggs' run down the right wing left the Shanklin keeper unsure whether to stay at home or come out leaving her doing neither and Spraggs was able to lift the ball over her. Unfortunately for Oxford, luck was not on their side. The covering defender, just getting to the ball before it crossed the line, sliced her clearance, but only onto the bar and away to safety rather than into the net.

United buoyed by that chance created another one on one chance shortly after, but a great save from the keeper saw the ball roll passed the post for a corner. At 3-2 it might have been different, but as it was Shanklin hit back again with two similar goals in the last 15 minutes making the final score 5-0. A scoreline that flattered the away side, but United will have to work harder if they want to get anything from this league.

An unhappy introduction, but maybe one that will spur the ladies on in the coming weeks.
