Report: Henley Town - Home
United 0 - Henley 1
United fail to get the points from a game in which they dominated possession, but struggled to create any real chances.
Oxford handed a debut to new signing Bev Hirons and it was Hirons running early on which caused Henley’s back four all kinds of problems. United were getting the ball wide quickly and the pace of their wingers was getting them into good positions, but Henley defended well and Oxford were reduced to long shots from their midfield trio, which were comfortably dealt with by the keeper.
But it was Henley who hit first on one of their rare ventures forward. United’s left back, sure the ball was drifting out of play, took her foot off the gas only to see the winger nip in, steal the ball and get a cross into the box. Henley’s lone striker, marshalled by both centre half’s, somehow managed to turn her way past them both and get half a yard to shoot into the corner leaving keeper Georgie Currie with no chance.
The goal deflated United, but they kept it tight for the remainder of the half and went into the break with the score 1-0 to Henley Town.
The second half again saw United take control of the possession and pass the ball around well, but their final ball was lacking and left Hirons feeding off scraps. United’s best chance of the match to level the scores came after the Henley defence switched off and midfielder Kath Boardman seized upon a weak throw and freed Hirons, but from the tight angle she was only able to fire just over the bar.
With United pushing for the equaliser it was inevitable that Henley would be able to hit them on the break, but on the few occasions they were able to pierce that back line they found an in form and resolute Currie in goal, determined to keep United in the game.
In the last 10 minutes Oxford stepped up another gear and with Henley’s delaying tactics, the match threatened to boil over. In the end though United couldn’t find a way and the match ended 1-0 to the away side.
