Report: Shanklin Town - Home

Posted on 25/08/2009

Oxford United Ladies new season in the Southern Region Premier started with defeat at the hands of Shanklin Town Ladies as United struggled to get to grips with their new league.

After an excellent pre-season all the ladies hard work was undone as Shanklin hit Oxford with two quick goals coming within the first 10 minutes of the match. From here it was always going to be an uphill struggle, but the ladies clawed their way back into the match and were undoubtedly having their best spell of the match when Shanklin hit the killer blow. After possession broke down in the middle of the pitch, Town pumped a long ball over the top. United all waited for the flag for offside, but it never came and a sure finish from the Shanklin striker made it 3-0 going into the half-time break.

The Oxford players, unhappy with their performance knew they needed to show the management they were better than this and started the stronger of the two sides in the second half. With the defence looking more assured and the midfield creating chances it was United that had the first real chance of the second half. Lauran Spraggs' run down the right wing left the Shanklin keeper unsure whether to stay at home or come out leaving her doing neither and Spraggs was able to lift the ball over her. Unfortunately for Oxford, luck was not on their side. The covering defender, just getting to the ball before it crossed the line, sliced her clearance, but only onto the bar and away to safety rather than into the net.

United buoyed by that chance created another one on one chance shortly after, but a great save from the keeper saw the ball roll passed the post for a corner. At 3-2 it might have been different, but as it was Shanklin hit back again with two similar goals in the last 15 minutes making the final score 5-0. A scoreline that flattered the away side, but United will have to work harder if they want to get anything from this league.

An unhappy introduction, but maybe one that will spur the ladies on in the coming weeks.
